"ALL PLAY IS NOT EQUAL" SMART START Book launch
Presented by Dr Jane Williams Director Research and Education Gymbaroo panellist and presenter of "Not all Play is Equal" session, PlayGroup Australia's "Power of Play", conference Gold Coast 5-7th November.
Extract:
Today's society is rediscovering the importance of everyday play activities for the normal natural development of our children, and the role these activities actually have in preparing our childrens mind's for a life time of learning. However, all play is not equal. Many parents are under the belief that "if I take my child to park everyday" they need to do no more. Others believe that lots of exercise is the key. Although aware of the fact that their childs world is very different to the one in which they and their parents grew up, they have not been informed of the impact this has had on how a child naturally develops and the ramifications that has on the future learning capability of their child. When the natural stimuli infants and young children need for healthy brain development are no longer available in the anticpated quantity (due to changes in their environment) then is it reasonable for natural optimal development to stay on track? A simple example, recently presented on TV, was that of a naturally blind person regaining sight through new technology reconnecting the optical nerves. Although this person had 100% vision, lack of stimuli to the developing brain meant it had not learnt how to fully differentiate what it "saw". So it is also true if our children grow up in environment lacking in stimuli they need for natural development, but abundant in stimuli that actually may interfere with that process. Dr Williams explores this understanding in detail offering constructive advice to attendees which they are able to put into practice (with the guidance of GymbaROO and our companion books SMART STARTand TOMORROW'S CHILD) on a day to day basis.
